BREAKING NEWS: Royals trade Scott Alexander and Joakim Soria

Sources have confirmed that Royals relief ace Scott Alexander and long-time Royals Joakim Soria have been traded.

In a less than surprising series of events, the Royals sent Scott Alexander to LA in exchange for RHP Trevor Oaks and LHP Luis Avilan.

Trevor Oaks, a 24-year old righty from Riverside, CA, appeared as the Dodgers number 13 prospect according to MinorLeagueBall.com. He posted an ERA of 3.64 with 3.49 FIP at AAA last year. He struck out 72 and walked only 18 in 82 IP across 15 AAA starts.

The Royals also acquires INF Erick Mejia from the Dodgers. Mejia put up an OPS of .770 at AA last year with 7 HR in 356 at-bats.

This is a huge move for the Royals. Oaks is probably the second best SP in the Royals farm system now, behind LHP Foster Griffin. He throws a hard sinker between 92-95 mph and has two above average off-speed offerings. He’s a guy who can probably slot into the Royals rotation by the end of 2018, meaning there’s probably another trade coming very soon. Look for guys like Hammel, Kennedy, and Duffy to be featured in trade rumors soon.

Joakim Soria was sent to the Chicago White Sox.

  2. FYI – what do you think of a deal of Herrera and Hammel to Braves for Nick Markakis? Royals would net about $7M less salary and clear another spot on roster. Markakis could platoon with Boni or Soler in RF.
It is clearly a salary dump in Royals favor but also gives Braves something they need in a starter and reliever. All have one year of control left. Would love to get a Braves young pitching prospects as well (Soroka would be ideal). Guess that comes to how good Dayton is at dealing.
Other option I looked at is a trade of the two to Baltimore for prospect pitching (they have several pitchers with potential in their system like Scott, Akin and Wells among others) but Royals might have to eat some salary in the deal. Still even if ate half the two’s salaries would save $9M and get a prospect or two back.
