NWA Week in Review: July 29 – August 4

Weekly Record: 1-5
Overall Record: 45-64, 14-27 second half
Standings: 4th, 8.5 GB

The Naturals had another rough week.  Jackson Kowar threw a 4-hit gem in their only win on the week.  Kowar went 8.0 innings Saturday earning the victory walking no one and recording 6 strikeouts.  Holden Capps threw a perfect 9th inning to close it out.  The Naturals had plenty of offense in this one with six extra base hits including five doubles.  Dairon Blanco was 2-5 in the leadoff spot playing RF.  Anderson Miller hit his fifth home run of the season for the Naturals.  Khalil Lee and Nate Esposito had two hits.

On Monday, the Sod Poodles put it to the Naturals with a 12-2 victory.  Emmanuel Rivera went 3-4 with a run scored.  DJ Burt leadoff and played LF field in this game and recorded a double and stolen base.  Gabriel Cancel again played 1B while Kevin Merrell played SS with Taylor Featherston at 2B.  Gerson Garabito went 4.1 innings giving up 4 ER.  He was tagged with the loss.

On Tuesday, the Sod Poodles won again 3-2.  JC Cloney gave up 3 ER in 4.0 innings for the Naturals and took the loss.  Conner Greene, Andres Sotillet, and Holden Capps threw the remaining 5.0 innings giving up a combined 3 hits, 1 BB, and 6 K.  The Naturals made a comeback attempt in the bottom of the 8th inning but fell one run short.  Lee and Freddy Fermin both had two hits for the Naturals.  Cancel moved back to 2B for this one while Angelo Castellano played 1B.  Castellano has been bouncing around between 1B and 3B recently while DJ Burt seems to be playing exclusively in the OF.

The Naturals started a four game series at Tulsa on Thursday.  I’ve already told you how the Saturday game went.  The Naturals lost the series 3-1 and didn’t score a run in the first 17 innings of the series.  They did get a strong start from Daniel Tillo though in a 1-0 loss.  Tillo went 7.0 innings giving up just 2 hits, walking 3, and striking out 5.  Franco Terrero gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the 8th inning to get beat.  Merrell and Lee both had two hits of the seven total the Naturals collected.

Ofreidy Gomez started on Friday night and got tagged with the loss although he threw a complete game giving up 3 ER on 6 H, 1 BB, and 9 strikeouts.  Blanco and Miller both had two hits for the Naturals.  Blanco had a double and scored the only run.  Cancel again played 1B.  Lee played RF and Blanco played CF.

The Naturals lost another close game on Sunday 3-1.  They only managed four hits and Blanco had two of them.  Lee walked once, had a hit, and stole his 43rd base of the season.  Brady Singer started and took the loss going 5.0 innings on 90 pitches allowing 3 runs, 3 hits, 1 walk, and struck out 6.  He did give up two home runs.  Grant Gavin and Tyler Zuber finished the final 3.0 innings without incident.

The Naturals have another full week of games and hopefully they can win a few series and push themselves back up in the Texas League Standings.
