The Kansas City Royals are calling up 25-year-old right-handed pitching prospect Josh Staumont, per Robert Murray of the Athletic (Twitter link). Staumont standing 6 foot 3, 200 pounds, was the Royals’ second round draft pick back in 2015. Staumont this year at Triple-A Omaha, in 32 games, had a 3.16 ERA and only 31 hits allowed in 51.1 innings. Walks have always been an issue with him, and this year hasn’t been a lot better for Staumont with 37 walks issued, but he has struck out 74 batters.
Staumont has an electric fastball, although he doesn’t always know where it’s going, and a good curveball. Staumont has served as an “opener” for the Storm Chasers twelve times this season, so maybe the Royals try him out as an “opener” sometime with the major league club (at least we can hope). A corresponding roster move will probably be announced sometime before Saturday’s game.
