Mike Montgomery has not been good in 27 IP this season out of the bullpen for the Cubs. If you take the 354.2 IP that Montgomery threw from 2016 through 2018, he posted a 3.35 ERA with a 3.94 FIP and 7.05 K/9 to just 3.35 BB/9. Montgomery is under two more years of control after the 2019 season. In my opinion, this is incredible value for Kansas City. It’s not exactly the type of value I would have preferred, but it is great value nonetheless.
ICYMI: Royals 21st ranked prospect Jonathan Bowlan threw a no-hitter on Monday.
The second inning started with a flyout and a ground out, but a throwing error by third baseman Dennicher Carrasco proved to be the only base runner allowed by Bowlan. In the third, Bowlan got two ground outs and a strikeout of Brice Turang.

Kyle Isbel rejoined the Blue Rocks this weekend after missing nearly three months with a variety of injuries.
Matthew Lamar, also at Royals Review, warns you not to sleep on Brett Phillips.
Striking out 38.8% of the time, as Phillips has in his MLB career, is a very bad thing if you don’t have towering power. Phillips doesn’t; as a result, his big league wRC+ is 72, placing him as basically as good a hitter as Alcides Escobar (70 wRC+) was for his career.
