Minor League Minutes: 7/16/19 – No-Hitter Edition

Jonathan Bowlan, the Royals 21st ranked prospect, fired a no-hitter with no walks last night for the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

The second inning started with a flyout and a ground out, but a throwing error by third baseman Dennicher Carrasco proved to be the only base runner allowed by Bowlan. In the third, Bowlan got two ground outs and a strikeout of Brice Turang.

The Royals traded Martin Maldonado to the Chicago Cubs for an old friend.

Mike Montgomery has not been good in 27 IP this season out of the bullpen for the Cubs. If you take the 354.2 IP that Montgomery threw from 2016 through 2018, he posted a 3.35 ERA with a 3.94 FIP and 7.05 K/9 to just 3.35 BB/9. Montgomery is under two more years of control after the 2019 season. In my opinion, this is incredible value for Kansas City. It’s not exactly the type of value I would have preferred, but it is great value nonetheless.

Royals trade Bailey for Kevin Merrell

Merrell is a solid defender with speed. He isn’t having a great season with the bat but was a 1st round pick in 2017. The Royals would have seen him when he played against them with Midland in the Texas League this season.
