The guys at Royals Farm Report are going to start selecting a hitter and pitcher of the month from the Royals minor league system. In the first edition of our awards, we recognize a couple of Royals prospects that absolutely destroyed their competition during the month of April.
RFR Hitter of the Month for April: Gabriel Cancel, 2B, NWA Naturals
Gabriel Cancel came out of the gates on fire to begin 2019. In 101 PA over 23 games in April, Cancel slashed .284/.356/.568/.925 with an organization leading 6 HR to go with 7 doubles and a 143 wRC+. Hitting in the 3-hole behind Khalil Lee in the Naturals lineup, Cancel also drove in a Royals MiLB leading 22 RBI for the month. After being left off of almost every pre-season Royals top 30 lists, Cancel appears to be on a mission early on.
Runner-Up: Nicky Lopez, SS/2B, Omaha Storm Chasers
RFR Pitcher of the Month for April: Kris Bubic, LHP, Lexington Legends
In 2019, the Royals only have one pick before pick #40. Kris Bubic is an easy name to forget in this system, as he was the 4th pick the Royals made in the 2018 draft, but that pick just happened to be the 40th overall pick in that draft class. With his performance to begin 2019, Bubic is going to make it very easy for you to remember him.
Bubic currently leads all Royals prospects in K with 45. He’s striking out a somewhat absurd 41.7% of all batters faced, and looks to be as good as advertised from 2018. He’s currently sporting a 1.86 ERA in 29 IP spanning 5 starts, and is the ace of a Legends staff that finds itself just 1.5 GB of first place in the SAL Southern division. The Legends are coming off of a SAL title in 2018, and Kris Bubic is doing all he can to help the team reclaim that title in 2019, even if he won’t be around to see it.
Runner-Up: Zach Haake, RHP, Lexington Legends
