Foster Griffin, Jake Kalish, Richard Lovelady, Jason Adam, Zach Lovvorn, Nick Dini, Xavier Fernandez, MJ Melendez, Nicky Lopez, Frank Schwindel, Bubba Starling, Andres Machado, Sebastian Rivero, Humberto Arteaga, Samir Dueñez, Jecksson Flores, Erick Mejia, Elier Hernandez and Michael Ynoa all received non-roster invites to the Royals big league Spring Training per Nick Kappel at Royal Rundown.
A non-roster invitee just means that the player is not currently on the Royals 40-man roster. Most of the guys on this list were either in AA or AAA last summer with the Royals. Michael Ynoa is new to the organization, and MJ Melendez and Sebastian Rivero will attend big league Spring Training for the first time in their careers as catching depth (this is common as the team needs a ton of catchers during ST).
I’ll be in attendance for the first couple of days of Spring Training, and while it’s incredibly unlikely, I just pray that I’ll get to see MJ Melendez and Sebastian Rivero do some catching while I’m there. The Royals young group of catchers will be fun to watch in general.
Sad to see Donnie Dewees was not included in the list as I still think he has a better chance of making an impact on the club than Hamilton, Gore, Phillips, Goodwin or Bubba.
Also, no doubt you will get to see Melendez and Romero. I saw both catching pitchers between fields and in minor league games last year while at spring training. Was amazed how many people I talked to had not heard of Melendez. Guess there are a lot of casual fans at spring training.
