The Saguaros are now 7-9 on the young season. But there are only 14 games left and they are currently 3.0 GB. Of course, the league is about guys developing and gaining valuable experience against the best and not so much about winning and losing.
On Monday, Juan Pablo Martinez hit for the cycle. Of course he plays for the Indians so we really don’t care. I just thought it was interesting. Khalil Lee was the only Royal in the lineup for this game and went 1-4 on the day. Grant Gavin pitched 2.0 innings allowing no runs on 1 H and 1 BB.
All three position players started on Tuesday while two pitchers threw. Lee went 1-4 with a double, R, and 2 K. Meibrys Viloria was 0-4 but committed three throwing errors in the game. Nick Heath went 1-5 as the leadoff hitter with a double, RBI, K, and was caught stealing third. Arnaldo Hernandez pitched 2.0 innings allowing 1 ER on 3 H and 1 BB. Walker Sheller pitched a scoreless inning as well.
In the Wednesday game, none of the Royals players participated.
On Thursday, Heath went 1-5 with a double, R, and K. Lee hit right behind him in the two spot going 1-5 with 2 RBI and a K.
Scott Blewett dominated his start of Friday going 5.0 innings allowing no runs on 1 H, 0 BB, and 6 K. Following him into the game was Hernandez who earned his second hold on the season going 2.0 innings allowing 1 ER on 1 H, 1 BB, and no K. Gavin earned a hold as well going 1.0 innings with just a BB on his stat line. Sheller closed out the game earning his third save with 1.0 innings and no hits, BBs, or Ks. Heath was 0-3 with a R, BB, K, SB, and threw a runner out at home. Viloria went 0-3 with a BB, K, and hit into a double play.
On Saturday Heath went 4-4 with a triple and 2 R. The first two hits were off Astros uber-prospect Forrest Whitley. Lee went 1-4 with an RBI but was picked off.
Nick Heath now has 10 stolen bases leading the AFL. Heath is hitting .385/.489/.487 right now. He has 8 walks compared to 9 strikeouts. He has scored 12 runs in the 23 times he has been on base. His on base percentage is currently 5th in the league.
Grant Gavin is currently 4th in the league with a 0.63 WHIP and tied for 1st with a 0.00 ERA. Gavin has been throwing as a reliever but that’s still impressive with 8.0 innings pitched.
Scott Blewett is 7th in WHIP with 0.81 and 8th in ERA with a 0.73 ERA in 12.1 innings. I wrote an article about him proving he deserves a roster spot with the Royals.
Arnaldo Hernandez is also having a good season throwing 10.0 total innings allowing just 2 runs on 9 H, 3 BB, and 5 K. He has a 1.20 WHIP.
Khalil Lee and Meibrys Viloria have been named to the AFL Rising Stars Game on Saturday night at 7 pm CST on MLB Network. I’m disappointed to not see Blewett, Gavin, and Heath get and opportunity as well.
