AFL Week in Review: October 9-14

The Arizona Fall League started last Tuesday, October 9.  The Royals have seven prospects on the Surprise Saguaros.  The Saguaros are currently 3-1 on the young season and in first place for their division.

Khalil Lee – Lee has played in two games going 3 for 7 and reaching base 7 of his 11 plate appearances.  Lee has 3 H, 3 BB, and a HBP.  He has stolen two bases and struck out twice.

Meibrys Viloria – Viloria caught one game and was the DH in the other.  He is 4 for 8 with two doubles.  Viloria has been on base 6 of 10 plate appearances with 4 hits and 2 BBs.  Viloria also has 3 RBI and 2 R.

Nick Heath – Heath has played in three games starting in the outfield twice and pinch running once.  Heath is 5 for 9 with 2 BB and has been on base in 7 of 11 plate appearances.  Heath leads the AFL in stolen bases with 4 in 5 attempts.  He also has struck out twice and scored 5 runs.

Scott Blewett – Blewett has not pitched yet but he is starting today’s game against Scottsdale.

Grant Gavin – Gavin has pitched in one game and he earned the save.  Gavin has allowed 0 ER, 1 H, and has no BB or K.

Walker Sheller – Like Gavin, Sheller has only pitched in one game but he earned the save.  Sheller has allowed no runs, 1 H, 0 BB, and 0 K.

Arnaldo Hernandez – Hernandez has thrown 1.2 innings giving up no runs or base runners.  Arnaldo has also recorded 2 K.

Tuesday, the Saguaros took a tough 10-8 loss to start the season.  Khalil Lee started in CF and hit second in the order ahead of Vladimir Guerrero, Jr.  Meibrys Viloria started as the DH and hit seventh in the order.

Wednesday, the Saguaros won a shootout 11-9.  Nick Heath batted leadoff, played LF, and stole three bases and scored three runs.  Arnaldo Hernandez pitched 1.2 perfect innings while Walker Sheller was able to get his first save of the young season.

Thursday was another high scoring affair as the Saguaros were able to hold on 10-9.  Viloria hit seventh and did the catching while Lee hit ninth and played CF.  Lee came in to run for Jeremy Martinez in the eighth.  When Lee was hit by a pitch in the eighth, it loaded the bases with Viloria, Heath, and Lee.  Just a random fact I thought was interesting.  Gavin saved the game in the 10th.

Friday’s game was much more “normal” because the score was only 4-1 in favor of the Saguaros.  Heath was the only Royal to see action in this one batting second and playing LF.  Heath was on base four times with two hits and two walks.  He stole one base and was caught trying to steal third.

The Saguaros and the rest of the league were off both Saturday and Sunday.
