August can be a weird time for Minor League Baseball players. Seasons are wrapping up, playoffs are set to begin, some prospects are in their first full season as a professional baseball player and some have been at it for 10 years. Some players wear down in the heat of August after a long season, some become rejuvenated. Well, the Royals have quite a few prospects that have been hotter than the weather they are playing in this month. Let’s take a look at how they’re doing:
- Nathan Eaton, UT
- .391/.424/.576/1.000, 1 HR, 8 2B, 3 3B, 6 BB, 24 K, 5 SB
- Somehow, Eaton posted yet another month with an OPS well over .900. He’s 3/3 in that category in his short pro career.
- Nick Pratto, 1B
- .351/.429/.588/1.017, 4 HR, 7 2B, 2 3B, 12 BB, 30 K, 5 SB
- Brewer Hicklen, OF
- .409/.490/.750/1.250, 3 HR, 4 2B, 1 3B, 4 BB, 13 K, 8 SB
- LOL, wut. Brewer Hicklen struggled quite a bit with High-A Wilmington and was sent back to Lexington after Seuly Matias went down to help Lexington reach the playoffs, but he is way too advanced for this level.
- MJ Melendez, C
- .300/.381/.567/.948, 4 HR, 8 2B, 2 3B, 12 BB, 32 K, 2 SB
- Set the SAL record for HR in a season by teenage catchers
- Emmanuel Rivera, 3B
- .337/.392/.533/.925, 1 HR, 9 2B, 3 3B, 8 BB, 15 K, 2 SB
- Samir Duenez, 1B
- .326/.404/.543/.947, 4 HR, 6 2B, 1 3B, 14 BB, 17 K, 2 SB
- Jecksson Flores, UT
- .343/.381/.467/.847, 0 HR, 9 2B, 2 3B, 6 BB, 16 K, 10 SB
- Xavier Fernandez, C
- .347/.418/.490/.908, 1 HR, 2 2B, 1 3B, 5 BB, 3 K, 1 SB
- Kelvin Gutierrez, 3B
- .305/.389/.442/.831, 3 HR, 2 2B, 1 3B, 12 BB, 19 K, 3 SB
- Having his best month since May and has been absolutely on fire for NWA
- Alfredo Escalera, OF
- .350/.406/.500/.906, 2 HR, 3 2B, 0 3B, 6 BB, 14 K, 0 SB
- Whoa
- Frank Schwindel, 1B/DH
- .327/.368/.570/.939, 5 HR, 11 2B, 0 3B, 6 BB, 15 K, 0 SB
- Donnie Dewees Jr., OF
- .329/.384/.456/.839, 2 HR, 4 2B, 0 3B, 7 BB, 17 K, 4 SB
I’m sure I’m missing some guys, but these dudes are absolutely on fire in August.
KC has had far more players who are having improved season over last year than not. Eaton should have a chance to be MVP of Pioneer League. He is in the top 5 in many categories. I like that KC is playing him at different positions. Really good to see Melendez and Pratto finish well. For first full season and being teenagers, it is a long haul to the end of August.
