FanGraphs releases their updated Royals prospects list

As we are releasing our updated top 100 Royals prospects list, plenty of other publications have begun to do the same. FanGraphs has released their top Royals prospects list, so I’m going to give you some brief thoughts I have as to their list.

First, let’s look at their top 30 (+1) Royals prospects and their projected Future Value (FV):

  1. Seuly Matias – FV 50
  2. MJ Melendez – FV 45+
  3. Khalil Lee – FV 45+

  26. Carlos Hernandez – FV 40
  27. Zack Haake – FV 40
  28. Juan Carlos Negret – FV 35+
  29. Elvis Luciano – FV 35+
  30. DJ Burt – FV 35+
  31. Yohanse Morel – FV 35+

It is really hard to argue with much of this list. I’m going to release my personal top 30 when our site rankings are done next Monday, but this list looks pretty similar. I’m getting more and more excited about Seuly Matias every day. Not just because of the power either. His swing is improving and he looks really really good in both BP and in games.

I’m probably higher on MJ Melendez than most people, and I’m encouraged to see FG have him rated so highly. In my opinion, Melendez is one of the 2-3 best defensive prospects in the system, and his bat has been top 5 as well. The 19-year old will probably spend a year at each level, giving him a chance for a 2021ish debut, but I am excited for his future.

Happy to see Gabriel Cancel here. He’s every bit deserving of that ranking. Emmanuel Rivera’s defense is probably what separates them at the moment as Cancel has been the better hitter.

Don’t forget about Michae Gigliotti. Potential top 5 prospect if he returns to full health. Also, Kyle Isbel making a top 10 appearance is amazing. I think we’re all really high on him.
