Minor League Ball: 217th
The Royals took their second straight bat in the fourth round, picking up Eric Cole, an outfielder from the University of Arkansas. Our Alex Duvall had some words to say about Cole in our newser on him.
Eric Cole reminds me a lot of the Kyle Isbel pick from round 3 in that, this is an advanced college bat that ought to move quickly through the Royals system. Cole hit .328/.414/.543 with 13 HR and 12 doubles in 60 games with the Razorbacks this season. Cole is a switch hitter that features more power from the right side of the plate and a better hit tool on the left side of the plate. Probably a corner outfielder, decent speed, really good feel for the strike zone at the plate.
Cole put up good numbers against good competition as a junior in the SEC, slashing .325/.413/.538 in 58 games. He showed a good approach at the plate, striking out 41 times and walking 33.
The swing is a bit long, but it plays to power. If the hit tool improves, Cole might become a very intriguing prospect with his pop. He’ll need to hit, because he’s strictly corner outfield.
