Opening Weekend Recap: Wilmington Blue Rocks

Minor League Baseball is upon us, Royals fans. For this 2018 Minor League season, your friends at Royals Farm Report have decided to divide ourselves up and cover teams on a more individual bases. For this season, I’ll be your Wilmington Blue Rocks expert. I’ll be giving you a weekly and sometimes nightly update on your Royals High-A affiliate, which currently consists of 5-6 of my favorite Royals prospects. Without further ado, here is your opening weekend recap for your 2018 Wilmington Blue Rocks:

Star Performers:

  • OF Khalil Lee (Royals #2 prospect): hitting .429 through 4 games
  • OF Rudy Martin: 6 stolen bases leads the Carolina League
  • RHP Gerson Garabito: 9 K’s in 6 IP

Frontrunner for team MVP:

Khalil Lee

Frontrunner for team CY Young:

Gerson Garabito

Home Runs:

  • Khalil Lee (1)
  • Emmanuel Rivera (1)
  • Gabriel Cancel (1)

It was a hot start for much of the Blue Rocks lineup, as the Blue Rocks split the series with a very talented Potomac Nationals club. Gabriel Cancel opened up his season by hitting a home run in his first PA, while Emmanuel Rivera and Khalil Lee followed closely behind. On the mound for the Blue Rocks, Cristian Castillo started the season off for the Blue Rocks by throwing 4.2 innings of 2-run ball. Walker Sheller closed out game one to earn the team’s first save of the season. Grant Gavin and Matt Wynne made their season debuts out of the bullpen in game two, each allowing just one run in there outings. Anthony Bender threw 4 innings of 1-run ball in relief on Saturday night, and Bryan Brickhouse made his return to the organization by firing a perfect ninth inning to earn his first save of the season. From sources who were at the game, Brickhouse looked “electric, incredible” and “really good.” It would be a great story for KC and Brickhouse if he can move his way up the system this season.
