In a rather questionable move, the Royals have DFA’d RHP Miguel Almonte, removing him off the 40-man roster, opening a spot to claim former Indians reserve outfielder Abraham Almonte.
It had been reported right after that Miguel Almonte had been dealing with some sort of injury.
Abraham Almonte, a former highly regarded prospect for the Yankees, had spent the two and a half seasons with the Indians as a reserve outfielder, slashing .254/.310/.408 in his time there. He played in 69 games last year, slashing .233/.314/.366. Almonte will start the season in AAA with the Storm Chasers.
There seems like there is more news to this story. There was some excitement starting to build with Miguel Almonte as a possible bullpen option later in the season, so this move came as a bit of a shock. We here at Royals Farm Report ranked him as the #23 prospect in the organization. It should be mentioned that a possibility of a trade still exists. If Almonte isn’t seriously injured, him getting claimed by another team would seem very possible.
