Another day, another veteran signing with the Kansas City Royals. Today, the news was that the Royals are RHP Ricky Nolasco are currently working on the terms to a minor league deal.
A former frontline arm with the Marlins, Nolasco has spent the past couple of years in the back-end of the Dodgers, Twins, and Angels’ rotations. Now 35-years-old, Nolasco hasn’t been near the level of his old self, posting a sub par 4.92 ERA, 5.10 FIP, and 7.1 K/9 last year. He will eat those innings those, starting 33 games in 2017, totaling up a grand 181 innings.
This signing scratches the heads of many, as this signing doesn’t seem to fit the mold of a rebuild very much. With there already being a glut of pitchers needing innings between AA, AAA, and the majors, this just seems to complicate the situation. But with the recent news of Jesse Hahn landing on the 60-day DL, the timing of this signing isn’t all that confusing.
