The Kansas City Royals made another move today, adding more depth to their roster by adding veteran INF Ryan Goins.
This move is very similar to other moves the Royals have made this offseason, particularly the signings of Tyler Collins and Cody Asche.
Ryan Goins is an interesting signing for KC. In 2017, Goins slashes .237/.286/.356/.643 with 9 HR in 418 AB with the Toronto Blue Jays. According to FanGraphs, Goins played 2B, 3B, and SS in 2017. He hasn’t played in the OF since 2016 but does have some (very little) experience there.
This move appears to be strictly for minor league depth for KC. Goins signed a minor league contract but was invited to big league Spring Training.
When Cody Asche was signed, I made a (somewhat) facetious theory that Whit Merrifield could be in the move. I’m not sure if I expect the Royals to move Merrifield this offseason (although I wish they would), but this signing would certainly make it easier to do so.
