The Major League Bullpen

story was written recently that projected the Royals bullpen. The projection is Herrera, Maurer, Peralta, McCarty, Buchter, Almonte, Machado, and Smith.  Let’s create our own!

The mock pen seems accurate but I think the Royals will keep Keller in the pen as well.  Keller is listed as a rotation option but with the rotation likely set it seems the only way to keep him is via the pen.  That would probably move Machado out and to Omaha.

I would replace Almonte with Flynn.  This would give Ned another lefty arm out there and Flynn is out of options.  Almonte has one more option so he can stay in Omaha until an opening pops up.

Gaviglio is another potential pen guy but I think Flynn is the arm we want.  Flynn  had a really good year in 2016 and was penciled into the pen for 2017 before his accident.  Gaviglio could serve as a spot starter and long relief guy and that’s why I considered him.

Obviously we aren’t at practices and only have part of the information used to make these decisions.  Let us know what you would do in the Royals bullpen @RoyalsFarm!

  1. I think McCarty stares at Omaha for depth. I think it is:

    Stout
    Maurer
    Smith
    Butcher
    Flynn
    Almonte
    Herrera
    Keller

I dont see Peralta making the team.

  2. You could very well be right but the Royals signed Peralta to a major league deal worth $1.5M. He has a power arm sitting mid 90s. He is the kind of catch lightning on bottle move that seems to work out for the Royals. Almonte could be there. Tough to know for sure. Stout would be the third lefty. Definitely interesting. It will be fun to watch this spring.
