The Omaha Storm Chaser’s season came to an end yesterday, and a 2nd wave of September callups will make their way to Detroit to join the Royals on their road trip.
Ramon Torres saw some time in KC earlier this season while Cheslor Cuthbert was on the DL. Torres hit a measley .242 with an OPS of .589 in 62 AB with KC, but hit a little better in Omaha as he hit .292 with an OPS of .718 in 295 AB. Torres won’t play much for KC in September, but may fill in as a defensive replacement for Moose a few times to get him off his knee late in games.
The guy I’m excited to see return to KC is Jorge Soler. Soler has been knocking the cover off of the ball in AAA Omaha. Soler struggled mightily in KC this season, though, as he’s only slashing .154/.245/.275/.520 with 2 HR in 91 AB in a Royals uniform. He’s gotten inconsistent opportunities and just hasn’t been able to put it together at the big league level. But he’s also hit 24 HR in 273 AB in AAA Omaha with an OBP of .388. The Royals could use that kind of right-handed bat in their lineup down the stretch. It’ll be interesting to see how Soler is used as the Royals embarque on one final push for the 2nd AL Wildcard spot. Me, I hope he gets to start tomorrow against LHP Matt Boyd in Detroit.
