Dayton Moore has struck again.
Melky Cabrera will be rejoining the Kansas City Royals after the Royals agreed to send 2016 2nd round pick AJ Puckett and pitcher LHP Andre Davis to the Chicago White Sox.
AJ Puckett received an invite to big league spring training this year, and has spent the season in High-A with the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Puckett is currently carrying a 3.90 ERA in 20 starts for Wilmington.
In Cabrera, the Royals will be receiving a switch hitting OF that is currently slashing .295/.336/.436/.771 with 13 HR. Cabrera has been equally good on both sides of the plate this season, with almost identical splits against LHP and RHP.
I love the trade, personally. Cabrera is a guy who may take over immediately in LF or at DH, or at the very least alternate among the corner OF spots and DH.
Jorge Bonifacio has been the best hitting OF for the Royals in 2017, and I don’t see him being the one to lose at bats to Cabrera when he joins the team.
