Previewing the AZL Royals

Starting today, many young players will start/continue a long road to the major leagues. This includes many Royals draftees and signees embarking on their road to Kauffman Stadium.

The AZL Royals get things started up tonight at 9:00 CT, as games for the Arizona League are starting up. We’ll take you through the roster.

A lot of the players the AZL Royals were drafted very recently. The biggest of them all is first round selection, Nick Pratto. He’ll be joining many other recent Royals draftees. This includes 2nd round pick M.J. Melendez, 5th round pick Charlie Neuwheiler, 7th round pick Brewer Hicklen, 8th round pick Holden Capps, and 10th round pick Jordan Floyd, along with others.

Some players will be repeating this level. This includes RHP Dillion Drable, who pitched well in 60.1 innings with the AZL Royals last year and catcher Mike McCann, who had 15 ABs in the Arizona League last year. Along with them is Gustavo Tejeda, who the Royals converted from catcher to reliever.

A lot of players will be coming from the Dominican Summer League Royals. Three of the four starting infielders played in the DSL last year. 2B Esteury Ruiz, SS Cristian Perez, and 3B Angel Medina.

Also listed on the roster is relief pitcher Sixto Torres. He was the New York Mets 17th round draft pick in 2015.

Something that should be very interesting to watch will be when/if Ashe Russell pitches. The Royals 2015 1st round pick has only pitched 38.1 innings since he was drafted. He is listed on the AZL Royals roster.

It should be interesting to see how some prospects fare. A lot of players can make a name for themselves here.
